Marsimoto GTA Game

Game modding & in-engine music video study

What happens when a music video is played rather than shot? For Marsimoto, we went back to a cult classic and turned GTA San Andreas into our production environment. We modelled and textured a cast of custom characters and vehicles in Blender, from Marsimoto, Marteria and Sido to a Jack Daniel's can, an avocado and a brain-shaped car. Each asset had to fit the game's original low-poly aesthetic while carrying the surreal, green-tinged world of Marsimoto.

Using a range of modding tools, we then took the game apart and rebuilt it around our assets, swapping models, textures and vehicles until San Andreas became Marsimoto's own playground. Every modification was a small experiment in how far a twenty-year-old engine could be pushed. Finally, we played through the modded world and recorded sequences straight from the game, which became the raw material for the music video clips. The result sits somewhere between nostalgia and new media: a rapper's universe, rendered in the language of early-2000s gaming.
